Course description:
You can spend a summer studying in Rome, Italy at John Cabot University (JCU). John Cabot University (JCU) was founded in 1972 as a four-year college of liberal arts and sciences, with all courses taught in English (except Italian language and literature). Today JCU is a unique accredited independent university with American roots and a distinctively international character, offering its students both European and American degrees.
The structure of the university, as well as its teaching style, is American in nature. John Cabot's main campus is situated near St. Peter's and the Vatican in the charming Trastevere quarter, with a fine-arts annex on the other side of the Tiber River. The central Rome location means that students are literally surrounded by the history and art of thousands of years.
While at JCU, you will take either one or two courses during a summer session. Since John Cabot is a comprehensive university with its courses taught in English, you have a wide range of courses from which to choose.
JCU also complements its summer course offerings with unique Summer Institutes open to all interested students. For the Summer 2010, they are offering:
- Summer Session I: Creative Writing and Literary Translation in Rome
- Summer Session II: International Communication in Rome
You will live in one of two styles of housing in the Trastevere neighborhood - either residence hotels or shared apartments.
Trastevere is the neighborhood in which John Cabot University is located. Characterized by narrow, winding, cobbled streets, it is full of small trattorie, restaurants, clubs and coffee bars. This is a popular destination for students and young professionals, so it is crowded and vibrant in the evenings. The residence hotels are similar to dormitories here in the US and are suites typically with two or more double rooms. The suites each have a kitchen and a bathroom, while some suites also have a shared common room. All of the residence hotels have regular cleaning services and on-site maintenance and support.
The apartments are usually four to six students living in shared rooms. Each of the apartments has kitchens, bathrooms, and common living areas. Linens are provided, as is access washing machines either in the apartments or nearby. None of the apartments have air conditioning or clothes dryers, which is very common in Rome and Europe in general. Apartments in Trastevere are in the geographic area between the Trastevere train station and JCU campuses.
Adapting to typical Italian housing allows you to gain a greater understanding of Italian life. When you make a decision to come abroad for a semester or for a year you want to widen your knowledge of the world – not to simply live the same way you have always known.
While JCU residences are standardized in terms of basic amenities, they may vary in aesthetics; students must understand that University housing is Italian by nature in every way, including but not limited to its structure, surroundings, utilities, furnishings, and neighbors.
